Minutes for February 16, 2003

Officer's Reports

Knight's Marshal: Alexander is planning a baronial fighter clinic in mid-March, weather permitting. He's waiting for the update on MK siege weapons so that he can make sure all local siege weaponeers are up on the new regulations. Currently, there are new Society level siege weapons regs, but there's nothing from Palymar regarding the MK regulations as yet. (Frederich notes that this is frustrating, as his siege weapon is taking up space in his garage, waiting for the new rules.)

Chronicler: Katarina is planning to publish the newest edition of the newsletter before March 10. The top feature will be Alderford's successful Masque 6 event. Next publication date will be on or around June 10. Again, she reminds the barony that her position as chronicler is TEMPORARY, and she's looking for a replacement to take the office as soon as possible.

Herald: Master McPhelan has accepted Katarina's application to be the barony's new herald. She's reported to kingdom and Oaken regional. The biggest thing coming up for the office is the Northern Oaken Regional A&S, which will involve a royal court. She hopes to incorporate the voices of all the baronial heralds in this court, if possible.

A&S: Saradwen has not yet planned quarterly activities for this office. Ailith asked for a tentative list by next meeting. As Saradwen is focused on the upcoming A&S event, this gives her time to schedule things. Ailith gave some alternatives, and encouraged Saradwen to plan activities that wouldn't result in costs to the Barony, perhaps seeing if members would be willing to host activities in their homes. As Saradwen mentioned only having had the office since the beginning of the month, she feels she has lots of planning to do.

Exchequer: Genofeva announced the current balance at $365.85; Ailith shared with her that the baronial auction at Alderford's event made $277.50. The barony also paid $400 toward the rent for the Northern Oaken A&S site.

GROUP NEWS

  • Alderford: Masque of Courtly Love 6 did very well-over 200 people attended. The Alderford Performer's Guild had their premier, and the Cook's Guild, comprised of members from all over the barony delivered another great feast! New event plans call for another Oaken Melee School in June, and a proposed camping event in September.

A big demo is being discussed for late spring-the North Canton Jaycee Fair. More details are to be announced at the next baronial meeting.
  • Gwyntarian: As the site provider for Northern Oaken A&S, things are hopping in Akron. Folks are planning for setup and general event operation. A demo is scheduled for Hartville Elementary School on Feb. 22, and the group is discussing an event for late spring at Craftsman Park in Portage Lakes.
  • Thistle: Regular meetings at the College of Wooster on Sundays. Please check with the seneschal, as spring break for the College is coming up soon, and meeting may be moved.
  • Three Towers: Coordination for Northern Oaken A&S on March 22, planning Encampment at the Castle in late June, and working in a demo on February 23 at Little Washington Congregational Church in Mansfield. The group is also discussing a possible fall event themed on the fall of Hastings in 1066.

OLD BUSINESS

The members gathered reviewed Master Patrick's event proposal that was initiated at January's meeting. After much discussion, it was decided to table the proposal, mainly because the barony will poll for status before the proposed event date, and it would be good to have proceeded to full status before attemping an event of this scope. Ailith made clear that any official, (ie, listed in the Pale) event or activity scheduled for the fall is subject to this tabling, as we must wait on our status notification. Quarterly activities are expected to go on as scheduled, as they're informal and not listed in The Pale.

NEW BUSINESS

  1. The Pegasus Farms demo is cancelled for this year. The insurance monies that the farm had to cover were too high, and ended up with a smaller amount of funds raised than in previous years.
  2. A new demo: May 9, Medina County Achievement Center, Medina Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. It's a part of the Kennedy Foundation's Very Special Arts Day national program to bring arts to folks in the mentally challenged community. Students from Summit and Medina County will attend. SCA members who can sing, play an instrument, use drop spindles, and demonstrate various arts and sciences are needed. There is no fighting at this demo at the request of the Achievement Center. Please contact the demo coordinators for more information:

  1. Ailith announced that letters of application for Baron and Baroness will be accepted from March 15 through April 15, 2003. To apply, candidates should include: SCA resume, intent/vision for the barony, SCA member #, SCA names, legal names, and a photo. The poll is scheduled for the end of September.

All candidates and requested information will be posted on the baronial website. A hard copy can be obtained by contacting the chronicler.

Saradwen emphasized the necessity of reaching the disenfranchised in our area, particularly the folks who are "Pennsic members", and those who don't regularly attend group meetings.

Ailith encouraged everyone to talk to folks who they knew didn't attend group meetings regularly. She focused on a sharing of information, resources, and so on.

It was mentioned that quarterly activities provide an opportunity for those not involved on a regular basis with local groups or the barony to get to know us better.

Gourdon noted that there's a large group of Tu-chux in Trumbull County, and asked if anyone knew how to contact those folks.

Frederich asked if there were areas that we could leave out of the poll, as they'd already said they didn't want to be included in the barony. (Ie, Rivenvale, Falcon's Quarry.)*

Justin, as Kingdom New Groups officer (as of 2/1/03) has offered to ask Rivenvale how they feel about the baronial issue, and if they want to be included in the poll or not. He has noted that he will report back at the next baronial meeting if possible.

An outgrowth of this offer is the Baronial Road Show, suggested by Milica, where teams of two or more folks from the barony go to local groups in the area to answer questions and concerns. The emphasis is to be on a postive sharing of information, and an open conversation, as well as letting groups know about the planned quarterly baronial activities. There were no volunteers for teams immediately, although Saradwen volunteered to go to Rivenvale. This may happen after Justin's visit.

Those who wish to volunteer for this program (either singly or in teams) should report to Ailith so that she can work with scheduling the visits with the senechals to the local groups. The plan is to present an open, relaxed forum, in co-operation with the local groups.

March's meeting will be held at the home of Milica and Justin on Sunday, March 16 beginning at 2PM. Details will be posted later.

*Seneschal's Note: Falcon's Quarry opted out of the baronial process at the very beginning.
