Minutes for July 15, 2006

Meeting called to order by Her Excellency, Baroness Catriona. Approximately 25 gentles in attendance representing various shires.

The Baron:

Pennsic Baronial camp organization proceeds. All but last minute planning in place; Baron anticipates no more problems than usual.

The Baroness:
Problems have arisen with Baronial Championships; see discussion below. Congratulations to Lady Bekea who authorized in fencing and to Lord Algar who authorized in great sword today.

Group Reports:
Alderford:
Nothing to report; all busy with feast preparation.

Gwyntarion:
July 1st event, “First Contact” was a success. $500 profit reported. Entries for haiku competition were numerous and “high class.”

Three Towers:
Encampment at the Castle in late May netted $1,000 profit thanks to increased attendance generated by last minute threat to Baronial lands and related call to arms.

Thistle:
Currently on reduced summer meeting schedule: informal social gatherings and pre-Pennsic work sessions. No news is good news.

Baronial Officers' Reports:

Seneschal:
Seneschal and Deputy Seneschal, not in attendance due to real world commitments.

Herald:
Lady Gauselin regrets that, due to family responsibilities, she will be stepping down as Baronial Herald. Her deputy, Baron Nigel will take over. Necessary paperwork signed at meeting

Exchequer:
Lady Bekea reports that “we have money.”

Discussion:
Baronial Championships
Baroness Catriona updated the populace on the situation regarding setting a date for the fall Baronial Championships. We cannot hold them on the original date chosen as that is also Coronation weekend and new Kingdom policy, originally thought to take effect in 2007 but apparently now in place, forbids any event other than Coronation for that weekend. Original site (Smithville Methodist Church) is not available any other time during September or October and weather is iffy for outside activities after that.
Baroness noted that the Shire of Rivenvale offered their September 16th event as location for championships. In discussion, it was noted that Rivenvale is located in the Youngstown area, a far drive for our folk, and that Rivenvale is not part of Brendoken. It was pointed out that an in-barony site would be more appropriate. Giles (Three Towers) also noted that Rivenvale has no resident rapier marshal.
Bekea (Thistle) suggested that championships be postponed until spring. Baron Alexander noted that Kelly and Sue, the current autocrats, would be moving in the spring and would not be available to organize the event. In addition, Kelly will be taking over position of Baronial Seneschal in August at the Pennsic Meeting/Open house/Revel. General discussion was against postponement or cancellation in 2006 with current champions continuing through 2007.
Wulfwen (Gwyntarion) pointed out that an autocrat would not be required if the championships could be incorporated into one or more already scheduled events. Arwenna (Gwyntarion) offered to host the fencing and arts & sciences competitions at their November 14th event. Mageen (Thistle) agreed to explore the possibility of holding the archery, thrown weapon, and heavy weapons contests at the September Baronial meeting at Smithville Historical Society.
Baroness Catriona wished to make it clear that the splitting up of the Baronial championships would be a one time only decision made due to this year's set of circumstances. A regular Baronial championships event will be reinstated next year.
Their Excellencies will also extend thanks to the Shire of Rivenvale for their offer of a site and for their continuing friendship. It was suggested that the Barony show thanks for Rivenvale's offer by supporting the event through attendance.
There being no further business, the meeting was concluded.
Respectfully submitted,
Lady Mageen, Secretary of the Day

Respectfully,
Milica of Varna
Chronicler, Barony of Brendoken
