Introduction to Calligraphy

An introduction to Uncial, and Gothic texts meant to wet the interest of youth in the arts of Calligraphy and inspire further learning.

Superstitions about Gemstones

Students will learn medieval superstitious beliefs about gemstones and make their own necklace of period stones.

Introduction To Pages School

Performing in Front of an Audience

In this class, we will learn exercises to help relax before performing in front of an audience. We will also discuss how to make an entrance and exit, projection, and getting the audiences attention.

Introduction to Knitting

Learn the how to cast on and cast off, learn basic knit and purl stitches.

Youth Marshalling - The Tough Love Version

Unlike adult armored combat or rapier combat, 99% of the problems encountered in youth combat programs in the SCA have not involved the youth. The problems encountered during youth combat are caused by spectators around the list field. This class identifies the most common problems encountered and provides guidance for marshals on how to deal with these problems.

A brief look at the design and construction of Gothic Cathedrals. The first portion of the class wll be a review of the design philosophy and development of the Gothic style, as well as the cultural and economic influences. Knotting from the Tang to the Ming Dynasty

All tied up in knots? If not, then come and learn how to tie knots the Chinese way. This class covers the history of knotting throughout SCA period. We will discuss the basic knot patterns, materials used, and how they were incorporated into everyday life. If you have the patience of a Zen master, you can try your hand at the brain puzzling Pan Chang or basket weave knot. Handouts and knotting supplies will be available.

The Whole Fleece Facts: Working from the Sheep Up

You are a spinner and you just got a fresh fleece. Now what do you do? This class will discuss how to approach raw wool: cleaning and preparing it for spinning with attention given to documenting te wool along archaeological terms.

Weaving an Irish Brat on a Warp-Weighted Loom

As part of our team entry for the recent Golden Seamstress Competition, and Irish Brat (shaggy mantle) was woven on a warp-weighted loom for a 9th Century man's costume. The class will briefly cover the historical context of the brat, the archaeological finds of pile fabrics in the selected time period, and an overview of the the history of the warp-weighted loom. The majority of the class will be a description and discussion of the different techniques used to complete this project on a warp-weighted loom.

Advanced Fingerloop Braiding

Five braids for the price of one! We will learn the "Cros olyet bord of viij bowis" from Tollemache, and four related braids in the process. Solid comfort with basic 5-loop braids is enough to tackle this level.

Beginning Arabic Calligraphy

Learn your ABC’s all over again! Class will go over the Arabic alphabet and how Arabic calligraphy differs from European tools and techniques. Attendees are encouraged to bring a calligraphy pen for hands on practice, limited loaner equipment will be available.

An introduction to the 8th through 12th century Carolingian Minuscule Calligraphy. Technique, form and a brief history will be covered.

Italian White Vine Illumination

This class will explore the development of Italian white vine, and as a hands-on learning experience using gouache paints, participants learn how to break down the construction of white vine work and will create a white vine initial.

Introduction to Shudo-itsu & Chinese Brush Calligraphy
THL Gauselin the Lost

Introduction to the equiptment and care thereof. How to hold the brush properly, which is not the same as holding a pen or a brush for other styles of painting. Balanced position and breathing, limbering exercises. The strokes, ink grinding, how to fold a Rice (Mi) Field and particle construction. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inkstone and bamboo brushes if they have them as there is a limited amount of loaner equiptment available. Practice paper will be supplied.

Learn a variety of durable and beautiful period methods of affixing wax seals to documents. Discussion and examples followed by some light hands-on to create a sampler to take home. Appropriate for all levels andd interests, from scribal to string.

Egyptian Style Belly Dancing

Have you ever looked at a dancer and asked "How do they get their bodies to do that?" This is an introduction to the body isolation techniques found in the Egyptian style of dancing.
