Letter from Sgt Einar Blakklar and Lady Maerwynn of Warwick for election to Baron and Baroness of Brendoken

Unto the populace of Brendoken do we, Sgt Einar Blakklar and Lady Maerwynn of Warwick give greetings and respectfully submit our application for consideration as Baron and Baroness.   We have been citizens of the Barony since the beginning, and since its inception have provided our unwavering support for our current Baron and Baroness and the Barony‘s endeavors.   Maerwynn and I have watched the growth of our Barony in recent years as its population, participation and prestige in service, martial activities and arts & sciences have increased.  Our Barony has achieved much in the last few years and we would like the opportunity to serve our citizens and continue the forward growth that Alexander and Catriona have so carefully fostered.  Our Barony is known for having a truly renaissance population where martial, service and the arts and sciences are balanced like a well-made blade.  We would be honored to continue this wonderful diversity that Brendoken has achieved and build upon this foundation.

Our long term plans for the Barony would be:

  1. Support Brendoken’s Martial Teams.  The Brendoken Blades are a very well known, cohesive fighting unit.  The Brendoken Archery group is a recognizable, active group.  We would like to make the heavy weapons fighters as formidable on the field as the other martial activities, with as much crossover as possible.  At Brendokenfest, Lady Bekea challenged everyone to compete in every Champion’s competition.  Would it not truly be amazing for a large Baronial contingent to be able to field every martial activity?
  2. Support Brendoken’s Arts & Sciences.  We are quickly earning renown for our bards and scribes, but they need to be supported by the Barony.  We have seen the great talents of the populace of Brendoken and would like to make A&S competitions a more enjoyable experience for participants and judges.  Many of us have never entered a competition, although our populace is as talented as anywhere else in the Kingdom.  We would like to see our judges and entrants educated and mentored, so that A&S becomes de-mystified.
  3. Support Brendoken and its populace.  Brendoken is the youngest Barony in the Middle Kingdom, but is quickly becoming notable.  We have set a standard for courtesy, chivalry and respect that is garnering acclaim throughout the realm.  We want to continue the sense of “esprit de corps” that marks an individual as member of our Barony while still continuing to network and promote our populace and Barony as a whole.

In the Society for Creative Anachronism, I am known as Sergeant Einar Blakklar. My persona is an 11th Century Viking, serving as a “tax collector” for the settlement of Jorvik, when not off on the occasional exploration trip.   I have been an active SCA member for over 10 years.  I have served as the Marche of Alderford’s Group Knight Marshall since 1997 and as our groups’ seneschal since 2006.  I have been actively squired to Sir Dilan MacAnTsaior since 1998.
I received the Order of Red Company for leadership and prowess on the field and have taken great pride in training many of Alderford’s heavy weapons fighters and teaching the craft of armoring.  I often think I get as much satisfaction from the teaching as I do from fighting.   At this past Pennsic I received my Silver Oak for armor making and teaching.
I have been autocrat for the last 5 Melee at Roswell events.  Each one has been a successful and profitable event for Alderford.  I have also traveled to Borderkeep to help with their events.  At this past Pennsic, I volunteered to work in motor pool as part of staff.  I have served as Marshall in Charge for many Alderford events, planning creative and technical tournaments and melees.
I am an accomplished mead brewer and cook, having feastocrated for the recent Brendokenfest in March, as well as organizing and running my household’s Pennsic camp kitchen for the last several years.

My Lady wife, Maerwynn of Warwick is an 11th Century Anglo-Saxon from the West Midlands of England and married to a Viking in Danelaw England.  Maerwynn has served as the Deputy Chatelaine for the Marche of Alderford from 1998-2003 and as Chatelaine from 2003-2005.  She has also served as the Chatelaine for the Barony of Brendoken from 2005-2007.  She serves as a scribe for both the Barony and the Kingdom and for her skill in Illumination and Calligraphy she was recently made a Companion to the Order of the Willow.  Her skill with a needle is evident in the garb that she has made our family, as well as her embroidery.  She passes on her knowledge by instructing in Viking period garb and embellishing as well as the scribal arts.  At events, she volunteers in many “front desk” positions lending her cheerful countenance to troll and the list table.
